Simple Sensory Play Ideas You Can Try at Home
By Sabina Rai · May 14, 2026
Sensory play helps children process touch, movement, sound, and sight in a calm, structured way — and some of the best activities use things you already have at home.
Try filling a tray with dal or rice for scooping and pouring, making a simple obstacle course from cushions for crawling and balancing, or playing with textured fabrics like a soft shawl versus a rough jute bag. Keep sessions short, follow your child's lead, and stop if they seem overwhelmed rather than engaged.
If you notice your child consistently avoids or seeks out certain textures, sounds, or movements, it may be worth talking to an occupational therapist about a sensory assessment.
